Marion County Holds Child Support Amnesty Program

In an attempt to collect funds from negligent parents, Marion County held a six-week amnesty program for those who currently have warrants out for their arrest.

During this time, parents could contact officials at the Marion County prosecutor's office to learn more about their cases. In total, 900 parents contacted the office during the six weeks, an impressive number when compared to the amount of people who would otherwise have contacted the office without amnesty. In fact, this represented a 77 percent increase in parents who were interested in making payments towards their debts.

Since most of these parents are underemployed to unemployed, one of the primary services the prosecutor's office could provide was helping these parents find jobs. There are several programs available through the office that individuals can access if they are serious about making payments. In addition to allowing individuals to contact them, the office also reached out to 400 parents that had recently become negligent in the hopes of catching them before their debts became overwhelming.
